It is so true that the opportunities to work from home, bed, or wherever are greater now than ever. I had an appointment with a woman yesterday who would have cancelled due to illness, but had the energy to talk to me about her services from her sick bed. It was a very productive discussion and I didn't mind doing the work on the phone and computer. We used "join.me", a website for screen sharing for her business demo. Here she was, marketing and promoting her business to me, an interested prospect, while tending to her condition. I was struck by how far we have come since the days of the traveling salesmen.

It is not easy to work when you don't feel good or have much energy, but having the ability to work on your terms - what is best for you, your body, lifestyle, personality, is one of the greatest advantages of being a business owner. Though marketing can be difficult under the best of circumstances, having so many avenues to promote your business online can ease the pain. I would still encourage business owners to participate in direct face to face networking when they can - human contact remains a staple of most successful marketing campaigns.

Dina, thank you for your feedback and comments. I am so glad to hear that your client realized that taking time to heal increases energy, rather than the other way around. Patient wisdom, indeed!

Joan,
I loved your opening, it made me chuckle. While it is frustrating to be so debilitated, your advice for 30 minutes of work at a time is well worth heeding. I worked with a client after surgery who felt guilty for not getting going sooner, but she was able to recognize that “by taking the time [to heal], I have energy now.” It is a reminder of “Patient Wisdom;” a phrase I have heard you use before.

Wendy, I like your add-on tasks. A great list for a writer and editor. Can you outline an entire book in 30 minutes? That's impressive. I could outline a chapter in 30 minutes.

I agree, Dina. It's a tricky thing. We don't easily forget, nor do we want to dishonor our past or memories, good and bad, happy and sad. They certainly give us the texture in our lives. Your suggestion to integrate what serves us strikes me as a good "organizing principle."

Great post Joan. Memory is a funny thing, the past is to be respected. To move forward we have to integrate what serves us and leave the past where it really is, in the past.

I have been blessed with good health all of my life. I can recall several years ago when I had to have an emergency hysterectomy, I was so frustrated by the recovery process. I was working full-time for a company, had the leave, and they were very accommodating to my needs. But I could NOT stay in bed.

I was teaching a lot of yoga and pilates at the time and I attribute my rapid recover to that practice. I was back to work part-time in 10 days. My mother was upset with me that I wasn't taking care of myself according to the standards of her day. The truth is I didn't have anything productive to do from bed, so I got up.

Now that I work for myself, if I were faced with a similar situation, I would be able to manage a great deal of work from the comfort and support of my home. I am blessed that I had came through that experience fine and incredibly grateful that I have the lifestyle now that allows me to manage all my life functions according to what works for me.

This has been helpful memory; reminding me of all the good things in my life.

Christine, I'm glad this post came at good time for you. I appreciate you for saying something and encourage you to remember how wise you are. I've been talking to several business owners who have had to rebuild after a health setback. It's not easy but it IS possible. All have said it is a gift...eventually!
